Vessels of Light in Battambang, Cambodia.
Designed and Constructed July 2017.
These 90 sq. ft. teaching pavilions in Battambang, Cambodia, we designed and building in the summer of 2017 through the collective effort of 15 architecture students from around the world. The project was done under the leadership of the architecture firm 100 Fold Studio, and our local project manager, Seang Lee, and our clients.
We designed a simple, economic structure to serve the needs of the university campus where they are located, acting as an interface between the more public recreation sections of the campus and the private learning and housing spaces.
As a training academy for international work, all the corners of the structure are designed to face outward: the joists at the base notch together to extend beyond the square perimeter; the four columns are constructed to form an outward facing corner.
Traditional Khmer floating lanterns are represented in the structure by raising the base from the ground and floating a prominent roof over top. Luminaires are attached to the rafter ties, allowing the pavilions to become vessels of light in the darker hours.
